Sympathy Card
Lyrics
Introspoken
"Tonight, a family tragedy in a quiet suburb. Neighbors say the mother was 'struggling.'" "Experts say the question we should all be asking is... how did we fail her?" ...How did we fail HER?
Verse 1
Holy shit, ladies, what's wrong with you? Who crawled out your skirts and made you so blue That you would take life into your own hands And strangle it out with exercise bands? I mean, like - what the unholy fuck? And the anchor tilts her head like, "Awww... she was stuck" Or that one - day one at the mic: "Somebody, please, bring 'em home!" Day nine, turns out "somebody" was a man she made up on her own Mascara on for the cameras, lip gloss on for the plea That ain't a breakdown, that's a performance - get the woman an Emmy! Narcissus at the lake - only thing she ever loved was her reflection Then she cried on the six o'clock news to soak up the attention And the panel's like, "She was tired, she was failed by the nation" Failed by the WHAT?! She had a mama, a pastor, a whole congregation Pediatrician on speed dial and a village in the group chat And she STILL put herself first - so don't give me "she snapped" Now before you come at me: yeah, I know psychosis is real I ain't talkin' 'bout the sick ones - I'm talkin' 'bout the ones with a spiel With a motive and a man and a cover story memorized That ain't a "mental health crisis" - that's a narcissist in disguise

Send her a sympathy card (sign it "Thinking of you") She was "tired," she was "strugglin'," she was "goin' through" Send her a sympathy card (light a candle, say a prayer) Everybody know her name - and nobody know theirs
Verse 2
Next mornin', every channel got an expert on the couch Talkin' "stigma," talkin' "pressure" - nobody said the kids' names out they mouth Pastel infographic: "Normalize askin' for help!" And I'm with it - I'm WITH it! - but this ain't that, and you know that shit yourself Moms' group in the comments: "That could've been any of us!" Nah - a million tired mamas cried in the minivan and still made the bus Hashtag "Pray for Her" is trendin' - hashtag "Them" ain't even on the list And the comments callin' ME a misogynist 'cause I asked about the damn kids?! Then the lawyer says the magic words: "The balance of her mind..." Over in England that's a law - a mommy discount, signed and underlined Next one said the kids were "zombies," kept on cashin' their checks Incompetent to stand trial - but competent to collect! They got a movie star to play her in the movie of the week And the kids got a school picture in the credits, real discreet Now she's pen-palin' with fans, gettin' letters by the stack Writin' poems 'bout forgiveness - from who? ...They can't write back

Verse 3
Three a.m. in a Waffle House, I'm yellin' at the TV on the wall Waitress like, "You good, baby?" - NO, ma'am, I'm NOT - look at 'em all! 'Cause flip it: if a daddy did it, ain't nobody askin' how he's feelin' Ain't no expert on the couch like, "Let's talk about his healin'" It's a mugshot, it's a "monster," it's a life without parole Ain't nobody makin' pastel slides about the struggle in his soul Same crime, different chromosome? "Monster." Same crime, different zip code? "Monster." Same crime, different complexion? "Monster" - no tissues, no grace But a white lady in a cardigan? Now we gotta "hold space" And that man she made up? She made him Black - remember that? Nine days, the whole country huntin' for a ghost in a knit cap So what's wrong with white wom- Nah. Nah. Hold up. Let me say it right: What's wrong with Y'ALL?! Y'all believe the tears dependin' on whose face is cryin' 'em Y'all bought the made-up stranger, bought the "struggle," bought the "tired" - kept on buyin' 'em Y'all binged all three seasons, y'all bought the book, y'all sent the mail Y'all know her middle name - name ONE of the kids. Go 'head. ...Yeah. I'll wait.
