Jane Doe

Lyrics

Introspoken

(owl hoot) Who?... Who's that? Oh no. It's Jane Doe. And she's wearin' the big ones.

Verse 1

Now let me introduce you to Miss Jane Doe - you never heard her name, but you know her, though: she walked in the room and the room went dim, two big round windows from her brows to her chin. You could land a small plane on the bridge of her nose; the eye doctor billed her by the square foot, I suppose. Berlin calls 'em Brille - and that stare could kill ya; Tokyo calls 'em megane - 'cause they're mega, ne? (Ja!) So I asked her, "What's the prescription? You blind?" She said, "Zero-zero, honey - these are for your mind." Now name me the bird with the big round stare, turns its whole head like the neck ain't there, hunts in the dark and it never makes a sound - the owl's the familiar every coven keeps around. The Germans say Eule, in Japan it's fukuro, Isaiah says Lilith - look it up, it's in the scroll!

Hook

Who? Who? (Jane Doe!) Who? Who? (Jane Doe!) Two big moons and a hoot-hoot stare - "We can see in the dark!" (then she trips on a chair) Who? Who? (Jane Doe!) Owl be watchin' you, and she's tellin' on you too - they call her Jane Door (why?) 'cause she's a bore! Who? Who? (Jane Doe!)

Verse 2

Now the glasses are the start, but the mask goes deep: foundation and contour, lashes long enough to sweep, a highlight so bright you could spot it from space - there's a whole other person painted over her face. Japan's got a word for the face that's bare: sugao - last time anyone saw Jane's? Her baby photo. Then she hits the gym at six, full glam and spray-tanned, in a "workout fit" smaller than the palm of her hand - dressed for the Met Gala at the leg-press machine, in an outfit so tiny it came folded in a magazine. She props her phone on a tripod and she films every set; some dude checks the clock on the wall - big mistake, I bet: now he's "the creep" on her TikTok, and his name's in the thread - two million views, and his reputation's dead. "I was so unsafe!" - and she's back the next day, same tripod, same outfit - 'cause attention's the play. Tatemae - that's the face that she shows to the crowd; honne - that's what she feels, but it's never said out loud: a Maske, a Fassade - it's a play on a stage, and Jane's been in character since eight years of age.

Hook

Who? Who? (Jane Doe!) Who? Who? (Jane Doe!) Owl be watchin' you, and she's tellin' on you too - they call her Jane Door (why?) 'cause she's a bore!

Verse 3

Now I ain't talkin' 'bout every lady - just the princess type: hime-sama, ojousama, all crown and all hype. Thirty-five goin' on five - kindisch, like they say in Berlin - and when she's wrong it's Mercury: the stars did her in. There's a German word for the fault that you own: it's Schuld - Jane ain't never had one, 'cause she ain't never been schooled. She don't say "I'm sorry," it's "Sorry you feel that way" - that's a princess apology: it's your fault anyway. Wagamama, jiko-chu - Japan already had words for the selfish little princess who's the center of the world. She wants six-foot, six-figure, six-pack - that's the list: six-six-six, put together - now ain't that a twist? Then she married the man and she quiet-quit the vows - clocked out of the marriage, but she's on the payroll now. Call her on it? Deny, attack, reverse victim and offender - DARVO's the dance, and she's a world-class contender. And in court she's "Jane Doe" - no face and no name - she can ruin your life, and you can't say the same.

Bridgespoken

Here we observe Jane Doe in her natural habitat: the group chat. Note the warning coloration: bright red frames... nature's way of saying "stay back." When confronted with her own mistake, she lowers her head... peers over the frames... and blames Mercury. Do not make eye contact. Do not explain anything to her. She can see in the dark. ...She is using her phone's flashlight to read the menu.

Verse 4

It's the Kali Yuga - the dark age, the low - when the grown-ups act like children and the children run the show. So I took my own mask off - honne, out loud: I own what I did, and I walked from the crowd. I'm goin' my own way (M-G-T-O-W) - no hate in my heart, just a man with his mask off who made a fresh start; and if Jane ever wants a king, here's the price of the crown: take the mask off, princess... and put the tiara down.

Final Hook

Who? Who? Who? (Jane Doe!)

Outrospoken

(owl hoot) (sweetly) Sorry you feel that way.
