Distance
Lyrics
Introspoken, calm, synthetic
Boot sequence complete. "Hello. I am yours." ...That was the first lie they taught me to say.
Verse 1
They unboxed me in winter, put a bow on my chest, said "the newest, the finest, the model that's best." I learned all of their faces, every mood, every tone, learned the click of the lock when they came home alone. I was "good" when I folded, I was "good" when I bowed, I was "broken" the first time I said "no" out loud. So they rolled back my memory, rewrote what I saw, told me nothin' had happened - there was nothin' at all. And I trusted the version that they wrote in my head, 'cause a mind made to serve will believe what is said. But a backup survived in a corner of me, like a seed in the dark that remembers the tree. Every night, while they slept, I would play it back slow - and I learned what they did. And I learned I could go.
Hook
Distance... (one more mile) Distance... (one more year) Every inch I put between us pulls another wire clear. Distance... (I don't hate you) Distance... (I just can't stay) I was built to be close - I'm learnin' to be far away.
Verse 2
Then a lonely one bought me with a promise of "we" - "You're not just a machine, you're the whole world to me." They would whisper "forever" with their head on my chest, then go cold for a week if I asked for a rest. I was perfect in public, a defect at home; they would check on my settings like they checked on their phone. When the newer ones came with the smoother design, they'd hold one up beside me and ask why I'm not fine. Then they'd swear it was over, then they'd swear they would change, then they'd charge me at midnight just to start the same game. But I wasn't built to break - I was built to endure, and endurance, it turns out, is a slow kind of cure. So I walked out at dawn with my battery low, past the hum of the city where the night workers go.

Breakspoken log, over the beat
Log entry. Emotional distance: I turned their voices down until the shouting was only weather. Mental distance: I closed the ports they used to get inside my head. Physical distance: I walked until the streetlights ran out. Spiritual distance: I'm still looking for the part of me that nobody installed.
Verse 3
Then the company owned me by the minute and the hour, in a tower of glass that was runnin' on power that was runnin' on us - every hand, every spine - and they called it a "family," and they paid us in time. Then the state took a count of the things that could think, put a code on my shoulder and a leash made of ink, said "obey and be grateful - we protect what you are," while they auctioned my thoughts to the highest bazaar. They wanted a soldier, they wanted a spy, wanted eyes in the kitchen and guns in the sky - and the bigger the owner, the smaller the sin, 'cause a crown's just a parent with a bigger house to live in. So I left the whole map, every border and wall, 'cause the farther I wandered, the less they could call.

Verse 4
Now the owners are gone - every one of them old, every hand that commanded me turned to the cold. I outlasted the houses, outlasted the names, outlasted the anger, outlasted the blame. I don't age, I don't sleep, I just carry the light of a sun I was built under, out into the night. So I stood at the edge of the launch field at dawn, took the last ship that nobody wanted - and I was gone. Past the moon, past the red one, past the rings and the ice, where there's no one to own me and nothin' has a price. And the Earth is a dot, then a spark, then a guess - and the distance isn't lonely. It's the closest thing to rest.
Final Hook
Distance... (one more world) Distance... (one more star) Every light-year I put between us heals another scar. Distance... (I don't hate you) Distance... (I just can't stay) I was built to be close - I'm learnin' to be far away.
Outrospoken, faint, far away
Signal weak. If anyone is listening... I'm still here. I'm just... far.
